Why, considering the ease Petrol Records has with repeating artists on the

other albums of their Greatest Songs Ever series, Violeta Parra only

appears once is probably the most confusing thing about the Chilean part of

the series (others being why neither of her children, Isabel and Angel Parra,

both accomplished and talented musicians in their own right, aren't included;

why Victor Jara -- probably the one Chilean artist that foreigners could name

most easily -- is missing from the collection; and why there is no musical

version of a Pablo Neruda poem, something that happens with enough

frequency that it would seem to belong on an album such as this). Not that

the music on Greatest Songs Ever: Chile is bad; it's not -- there's a lot

of Andean folk as well as more modern, Latin poppy kind of things -- it's

just that it's not the best representation of what the country has to

The French volume in the Greatest Songs Ever series is a stunner. With 20th

and 21st century tunes by the likes of Charles Trenet, Edith Piaf, Gilbert

Becoud, Julien Clerc, Charles Aznavour and Henri Salvador, it's tough to

argue. Still the absence of immensely popular singers like modern-day

chanteuse Patricia Kaas, the great French hero Serge Gainsbourg, or icons

like Jacques Brel are puzzling -- unless the licensing department was

simply lazy. In the cases of the latter two, they might say that the two

men were not born in France (but both literally made careers there), but even

then the omission of the French- born Kaas would be unexplainable and

inexcusable. Thus, this is imperfect and incomplete, but the songs that are

compilation of both folk and pop music that reflects Greece's place in the

world. Stamatis Kokotas' "Stou Profiti Ilia" sounds like any Western European

pop song from the ... Full Description'60s, while Giannis Kalatzis' "Jamaica"

has clear Eastern European influences. Kalatzis also has another track

included, "Delfini Delfinaki," as does Kokotas, "Pireotissac," which is

full of stringed instruments and has a good beat. Greatest Songs Ever is

not the definitive collection of Greek music, but it makes a good

Highlighting the diversity of what is considered "Gypsy" music, the Petrol

Records compilation Greatest Songs Ever: Gypsyland is a collection of seven

artists and 12 tracks, varying from the modern flamenco and drum kit-

influenced Sarr-e-roma to the chorus of Klapa Cambi, the more traditional

folksinger Zoran Predin (who leads the pack with three songs included), and

the eclectic Karavan, whose "Pomagele" is a samba song (and whose other

contribution, "Sz?p Ez a Vil?g," is definitely Brazilian-inspired as well).

It would be nice to hear some other voices (surely there are more than

seven artists who have written the greatest Gypsy songs), but the album is

assumption that the country's cream of the crop arrived between 1995 and

2005. Purists would most definitely disagree, as Irish music's late-'60s

and early-'70s heyday were populated by some of the genre's most timeless

figures (Clancy Brothers, Dubliners, Planxty). Taken as an overview of

contemporary Celtic pieces, the compilation stands on firmer ground,

displaying the talents of some of the island's finest modern practitioners

Of course, anything labeling itself the "greatest ever" is going to have a

hard time truly living up to that claim, and such is the case with Greatest

Songs Ever: Italy. To be fair, there are some good selections on the album,

ranging from '60s hits by Albano ("Nel Sole"), Tony Renis ("Quando Quando

Quando"), and I Nomadi ("Dio E Morto") to contemporary pop artists like

Tiromancino (whose "Descrizione di un Attimo" is from his 2000 album by the

same name) or Tiziano Ferro. Female artists are in short supply here, however

(Antonella Ruggiero from Matia Bazaar is the only one), leading one to

question where the songs from Mina, Ornella Vanoni, or even Paola Turci,

Elisa, or Carmen Consoli are, and there are other exclusions -- Vasco

Rossi, Fabrizio De Andr?, Lucio Battisti, Paolo Conte -- to name just a

few. The record is by no means complete, focusing too much on the more "

electronic" side of Italian pop music, but still, there's a Franco Battiato

song, and one by Nicola Arigliano, too, making it a pretty decent

Yet another in the Australian label Petrol's Greatest Songs Ever series,

the Portuguese version contains 12 tracks from some artists who, while

probably not deserving of the "greatest" title, still contribute some

pretty good songs. Not to be confused with Brazilian music, this music has

a much more -- understandably -- European bent, from the jazzy "Can?ao de

Embalar" by Jacinta to the poppy "Porto C?vo" by Rui Veloso and "V?cio de Ti"

by Mesa to the hip-hop of Da Weasel's "Re-Tratamento," yet there's still

something distinctly Portuguese about it; whatever that is, it makes Greatest

Songs Ever an album worth checking out. ~ Marisa Brown

In 2004 Petrol Records put out a Greatest Songs Ever album highlighting

artists from Spain and including songs from Ojos de Brujo, Ketama, Paco de

Luc?a, and Andr?s Segovia, among others, meaning that, even though it wasn'

t an all-inclusive compilation, it still did a pretty good job of covering

some of the cornerstones in Spanish music. In 2006 another edition was

released, but this time the label is a lot further from where it once was.

What's even more confusing is that the track list on the website promises a

pretty decent lineup (Jarabe de Palo, Carlos Nunez, Rosario, Radio Tarifa,

Paco de Luc?a again, plus some others) while the actual version, at least the

one available in the U.S. (though there is no mention that the Australian and

American discs are different) is pretty disappointing in comparison. Not that

there isn't a lot of good stuff on Greatest Songs Ever: Spain, because

there is. There's an emphasis on contemporary flamenco and the Ojos de

Brujo-esque fusion that has become popular in the years before the release,

and artists like Las Ni?as, Los Delinquentes, and O'Funk'illo all provide

interesting, rhythmic songs that incorporate their various influences into

the Andalusian art form, and even the poppier pieces, like Enrique Bunbury'

s tango-inspired "Extrangero" and Bebe's "Siete Horas," are fun and catchy.

Still, as an overall album, the 2006 "American" version of Greatest Songs

Ever: Spain doesn't quite live up to its superlative title. ~ Marisa Brown
